Tasting Notes
2021
Intense nose with plenty going on, quite decadent with fruit cake, satsuma plum, blackberries, hints of vanilla bean and toasty oak. The palate is rich and luscious, a spectrum of dark fruits give way to herbal tones, leaf and cedar oak. A complete wine that won’t disappoint!
2020
Classic Cabernet Sauvignon characters of cedar, fresh herbs and black fruits. From a warm, dry year, this wine has ‘bucked the trend’ showing great balance usually reserved for cooler years. Rich fruit is balanced beautifully with acidity and tannin. Plenty to like!
2019
The nose is showing classic Cabernet Sauvignon characters of cedar, fresh herbs and black fruits, has a slight vanilla essence lift. The palate is rich with cassis, herb rub, fruit cake and is showing some mint of the finish. Great acidity and tannin profile will ensure aging for a decade or two.
2018
Complex nose with blackberry, plum, cedar, spice & herb rub. The palate is rich and vibrant with cassis, kirsch liquor, vanilla bean, mint & cedar. Dense & full flavoured, seamless in structure, this wine will age gracefully for a decade or two.
2017
The nose expresses more traditional cabernet characteristics. It’s quite herbal with a cedar, spice and underlying black berry fruit. The palate shows fruit cake, Kirsch liquor, some choc mint and herbal undertones. Seamless in its structure, this wine will age gracefully for a decade or two.
2016
A rich nose of blackcurrant with hints of vanilla, spice and cedar. The palate is warm & inviting with loads of character, dark berries, kirsch liquor, choc-mint and herbal undertones. Seamless in its structure, this wine will age gracefully for a decade or two.
2015
The nose shows cassis, tobacco, green bean with hints of spicy oak. The palate is rich and long, with loads of character, black berry, kirsch liquor, choc-mint, tobacco leaf and herbal undertones. Beautifully integrated tannins, and an absolute stand out that will be at its best after a decade in the cellar.
2014
It’s nice to see the Boundaries after a few extra months in the bottle. Low yields have led to a deeply concentrated Cabernet with a lifted nose of dense cassis, earth and herbal notes. The weight follows through on the palate with gobs of fruit, tobacco, cedar, fine dusty tannins and great length. There’s a touch more varietal character than 2013 thanks to the cooler conditions at the end of vintage but it’s still got plenty of weight behind it thanks to the small crop which provided concentrated fruit. An absolute classic!
2013
Super low yields this vintage has produced a densely packed Cabernet that displays a hint of herbaciousness and earth on the nose, which is soon overcome by waves of blackcurrant, tobacco and leather. I threw a generous amount of new American Oak at the pressings this year and it just adds a touch of fine grip to its silky smooth, persistent finish. 2013 is proving to be one of my favourite vintages.
2012
Here’s some pretty special stuff… The 2012 Boundaries (100% Cabernet) bolted out of the starting gate and never looked back. From day dot, this wine has been an absolute stunner. Tobacco leaf, cedar, all spice and subtle blackcurrant hints weave in and out of its incredibly complex nose. The silken, velvety smooth palate flaunts garden herbs and vanilla bean with lashings of cassis, plum and cedar. It finishes long and luscious and it’s simply spectacular. Best vintage for Cabernet in our 19 vintages, bar none.
2010
Ethereal, in every sense of the word, the 2010 Boundaries is one almighty shining light in the world of Cabernet Sauvignon. It must be tried, to be believed. I think the 2010 Black Guts is every part its equal but in any other release the Boundaries would be my pick of the litter.
